Dandruff is basically dead skin cells that fall off on their own or when you scratch your scalp. Many people believe that a dry scalp is what causes dandruff. Although this is true, it doesn’t mean that an oily scalp does not cause it.
There are a few factors that can increase the risk of dandruff include:
- Hormonal changes, like puberty
- Excess alcohol consumption
- Lack of nutrients like fatty acids and vitamin B
- Changes in the weather
Common Dandruff Causes
Dry scalp. Dry skin on the scalp can cause dandruff. This kind of dandruff can be treated with the anti-dandruff shampoos found in stores.
Seborrheic dermatitis. An increased production of sebum or oil from sebaceous glands around the hair follicles can cause dandruff. An oily scalp can lead to other dandruff-producing conditions like eczema.
Allergic or Irritant contact dermatitis. You can have an allergic or irritant reaction to a shampoo, styling gel, or other hair product.
